The switch at the top moves between five screens. Everything you make on them is one song, saved as you go — the Song screen shows how it all fits together. On Beat, Keys and Sampler, "Plays in" says which parts of the song they play in.

  1. Song — start here: your song at a glance, its parts in order and every layer under them (tap a square to bring a layer in or drop it out of a part), plus the chord chart with lyrics, the Timeline where recordings live, and the Mix — every instrument's volume, pan, mute and solo (the Beat as one strip that opens to each drum), the Room reverb, the Echo and plug-ins.
  2. Beat — the drum machine. A grid of steps for each drum, plus the Sample row that plays a Sampler pad in time.
  3. Keys — bass lines, leads, pads and piano: Blackcap's instruments, or an instrument app you've installed. Play the keys, pads of chords, or draw notes.
  4. Sampler — 16 pads for sounds you record or import: your voice, a guitar hit, a found sound.
  5. Record — your voice or an instrument: choose what you're recording and it comes set up. Vocals has your words following along. It also takes you to play notes into Keys, tap hits into the beat, or record a sample into the Sampler.
